| December 2020 Newsletter As 2020 draws to its end, we have much to be thankful for. We are trying to focus on those aspects rather than what has been lost. In the end, I think we will all have much gratitude for what 2020 has brought to us. We’ll have to wait and see on that, but I’m one who believes that this is all going to be worth all the pain and inconvenience. Remember when Bing Crosby sang that song about falling asleep counting your blessings? It’s a good thing to think about during these uncertain times, focusing on what is good and right and real in our lives during uncertain and strange times. During WWII, Harry Emerson Fosdick, who founded the nondenominational Riverside Church in New York City, is quoted as saying that although “this is a ghastly time to be alive”, it was also a “great time to be alive” as it was a time calling for “wisdom and courage to face and create momentous change.” He added that it is challenging times like this that cause us to separate out what matters in our lives from what doesn’t. Robert Emmons of the University of California, Davis, ensures us that “not only will a grateful attitude help….it is essential.” He goes on to add that “It is precisely under crisis conditions when we have the most to gain by a grateful perspective on life. In the face of demoralization, gratitude has the power to energize. In the face of brokenness, gratitude has the power to heal. In the face of despair, gratitude has the power to bring hope.” Finally, Dr. Brooks of Harvard University advises that we do know this day that we are alive and well and we must “refuse to waste the gift of this day.” “There are those that give with joy, and that joy is their reward. “ Khalil Gibran  Image by Ray Shrewsberry of Pixabay Time once more to think of gift giving in all its forms. This year small businesses have been extremely hard hit while the big box stores continue to grow in size and influence. I’m hoping that most of you consider purchasing gifts from local small businesses because if we don’t patronize them, they will disappear. If they disappear we won’t have a choice on where to purchase and prices could eventually sky rocket without competition. Plus all those local neighbors who used to own a local business will be without work. Etc. etc. Etc. You can see where this is going…… SO, please consider the local business when shopping this year. You might pay a little more but in the long run it will cost you far less. AND you will help make the Christmas season much brighter for your local store owner. Merry Christmas.
